7 GRACES... the many hues of Goddess Tara - Critics Speak
60 mins, 2005
A solo operatic creation by Anita Ratnam in collaboration with Hari Krishnan (inDANCE, Canada)

Audience reactions

Your minimalist movements were pregnant with shamanic power, and you embodied priestess, goddess, and mother in turn, sometimes in the blink of an eye. I gave up any attempt to follow the dance on an intellectual level, simply revelling in the uniqueness and rarity of those blessed and transcendental moments. To witness a world-class artist like yourself in action anywhere is already a privilege - but considering the natural aesthetics of the physical space, it felt more like a royal command performance (and everybody I spoke with afterwards expressed similar sentiments).

The boundaries between art, ritual magick and theatre became blurred as your dance progressed. You had your audience completely enthralled, that's for sure. More than once I felt goosebumps as the haunting music merged with the lyrical fluidity of your dance. I find myself unable to formulate concepts by way of "interpretation" - the experience of 7 Graces was almost wholly emotional and sensual, with a strong undercurrent of the mystical.

When I caught 7 Graces the second time around at Ramli's Amphi-Sutra, the atmosphere was, of course, entirely different. Watching you dance under the full moon was certainly an unexpected epiphany. I was able to observe and admire the technical artistry that underpins the choreography - and, although I am not usually fond of minimalism in general, this zen-like approach worked perfectly for your overall vision of Tara in all her multifarious manifestations.
