Workshops
at Canada
A Choreography
Workshop with Anita Ratnam, Lata Pada & her members of Sampradaya Dance
Creations, Toronto, Canada, was held from July 15th - 31st, 2000.
This was the
first phase - "Process And Enquiry", of a commissioned work with Anita
Ratnam as Principal Choreographer.
Phase Two from
September 6 -15, 2002 - "Mudras & Moves", was a ten-day South Asian
dance movement exploration and choreographic residency conducted by Anita
Ratnam for Toronto's Sampradaya Dance Creations.
The rich gestures
and movement vocabulary drawn from Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam and Kathakali
as well as principles of theatre and use of spoken text were the starting
points for the creation of transcultural choreography.
Dealing with
the sensitve issues of identity, art, race and exile from one's native
land and its traditions, Hyphenated was created as a 20 minute dance work
set on 5 Indo-Canadian dancers of Lata Pada's Sampradaya Dance Creations.
The premiere was held on September 27 & 28, 2002 at Harbourfront Centre's
Premiere Dance Theatre, Toronto, Canada. With music by Ernie Tollar and
Debashis Sinha, the text for the work was written and vocalised by the
dancers in collaboration with Anita Ratnam.
